In November of 2017 we provided the Falls Area Singletrack organization a conceptual plan and trail design for a three-mile system of multi-use (hiking/biking/running) trails in Tuthill Park on the banks of the Big Sioux River. Construction on the main trail was completed in July and work will continue to finish up the system through the fall of 2018.

Partnered with Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation F.A.S.T. has been working diligently for the last five years to bring this project to fruition. Entirely privately funded by generous donations from the community, businesses, and fundraising efforts from a variety of organizations, it is the first professionally designed and built natural surface trail system in the region. F.A.S.T. has big plans for additional projects in the region so stay tuned!

Hanson Larson Memorial Park

Rapid City, SD

In the fall of 2008 we travelled to Rapid City, South Dakota to help the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) break ground on their new ten-mile project with the Hanson-Larson Memorial park Foundation. Little did we know that a short five-week end-of season project would evolve into a role with IMBA performing field management and construction over the next two years; and ultimately a continuing role with the Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park Foundation assisting them with development and management of the park and trails from 2010 through 2018.

TrailArts assisted the Foundation with the development of an additional ten-miles of multi-use trails and road to trail conversions: Trails like the North Forty’s Northern Exposure, Tranquil Trail, and the North Loop; the Horseshoe Trail, Founders Valley Trails, and Green Valley Road to Trail truly rounded out the variety and increased the total mileage available in the park to over twenty miles!

TrailArts also oversaw the overall development, management, and operation of the parks facilities. Our work included organizing, planning, coordinating, evaluating, and directing the daily operations of the park: planning and implementing short and long-term goals, establishing and implementing policies and procedures, acting as community and government liaison, supervising project development and contracting, supervising construction, repair, and maintenance of park facilities and resources, and coordinating the Parks marketing and information systems.

Today the park is nearly 20 miles strong and has gained a reputation as one of the best managed trail-based parks in the region. It has been an honor and privilege to have served the Hanson-Larsen legacy, the Foundation Board, and the Rapid City community. We’re extremely proud of our work and hope that the contributions we made in establishing sound principals of trail development and resource management for the Park will be sustained and even enhanced in the future.

From 2005 through 2011 TrailArts assisted the the Trails and Open Space Department with natural-surface trail maintenance, new trail construction, and resource restoration and remediation in open spaces parks throughout the Pike Peak Region. We completed fifteen projects in six different parks and were the first professional trail contractor to introduce rolling-contour trail design and construction standards to the region. Projects like the Columbine Trail Restoration project in North Cheyenne Canon, numerous Stratton Open Space restoration and remediation projects, the first by-design trail segment in Red Rocks Open Space Park, trail and resource restoration at University Park Open Space, and wet-laid stone wall construction at High Chaparral Open Space defined our early years and set the standard for natural-surface trails in the Pike Peak Region!

Rapid City Department of Parks and Recreation

Rapid City, SD

From 2012 through 2016 TrailArts completed four projects for Rapid City culminating in eight new trails with 16 separate segments for a total of 6 miles. All in town!
  • Skyline Wilderness Area - West Dinosaur Park
  • Lien Park - Lower Far West Trail
  • Lien Park - Telegraph Road
  • Skyline Wilderness Park - Amphitheatre Trail
  • Skyline Wilderness Area - Stonewall Trailhead
  • Upper Rim Trail
The first section of the new Skyline Trail, as prescribed by the Skyline Wilderness Park Trails Master Plan, was designed and constructed between the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013. This section was the first section of true by-design multi-use trail in the park. In the fall of 2013 we performed trail improvements in the Chuck Lien Family Park, reclaiming several unsustainable social routes and developing two new routes connecting the riverside Flume Trail with Chuck Lein and Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park. We also performed additional road-to-trail reclamation work on the old Telegraph Road above Chuck Lein Family Park to correct drainage problems and improve trail quality. And 2014 brought the beginning of the Skyline Wilderness Park Natural Surface Trail Project and the addition of three new trails, The Skyline Trail, The Amphitheatre Trail, and the West Dinosaur Trail, and several new trail connections to the park. All in all, eight new trails with 16 separate segments for a total of 6 miles. All in town!

High Chaparral

High Chaparral Open Space Ridgeline Trail Scenic Overlook
Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (TOPS) Department.

Development of a trailside scenic overlook at the high point of the newly constructed High Chaparral Ridgeline Trail.  This ADA compliant scenic overlook offers breathtaking views of the Pikes Peak Regions foothills and alpine ranges from one of the highest viewpoints in Colorado Springs. Surrounding the overlook we’re constructing a ¾ circle wet-laid stone sitting wall approximately thirty feet in diameter and 65 feet in length. This completely hand crafted circular structure required an extensive layered foundation of crushed stone, dry-laid stone, and wet-laid stone due to poor soil conditions.  Construction will continue on the final above-ground tiers through early 2009. www.springsgov.com
